I don’t want to do any further ado on this one as the upcoming battle has been something I’ve been excited to talk about FOR SO LONG so let’s just get right into it
Tumblr media
I’ve said in the past how I used to despise Bellamy in Jaya and seeing him get one shotted by Luffy and then Doflamingo was a joy. After spending time with him in Dressrosa though, everything is flipped on its head. What Doflamingo is doing is needlessly cruel and Bellamy himself genuinely doesn’t believe he deserves better. His fight with Luffy now is in a completely different light than the Jaya one, and that’s just masterful storytelling
Tumblr media
Luffy seeing a friend of his be put through this completely disregards following Law’s plan, and immediately jumps at the occasion to beat the shit out of Doflamingo. And OH MY GOD FINALLY Doflamingo gets the first actual real punch landed on him. I said the same thing about most main saga villains, the first punch Luffy lands on them is always so so satisfying
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now I can finally talk about Doflamingo himself, and I’ve been waiting for this for so long you have no idea. Doflamingo is a villain shaped almost completely by his past, the more of his backstory we uncover, the clearer it becomes what made him the vicious monster he is today. Being born a Celestial Dragon, he was able to experience being treated like a god, in an environment where the more egotistical you are, the more you are rewarded. And then suddenly all of that was ripped away from him. Even worse, after Homing made the stupid mistake of bringing his angry ex-noble kid into town, the witch hunt for the Donquixote family started, resulting in Doflamingo meeting Trebol and the others, and killing his father. It’s no wonder he believes people are vicious by nature, where everything in his life at that point has pretty much proved it. Almost everything, but to that in a moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doflamingo and his family have been hurt beyond anything humane by the common folk, who you can’t even blame for jumping at the first occasion to hurt Celestial Dragons due to their experiences, none of that changing the fact that no child should ever go through any of this, and it doesn’t matter if Doflamingo was screaming about murdering people when he was a kid, because in no way does his behaviour justify being tortured, having his mother die of sickness due to their situation and having to become the provider for himself and his little brother. And when that angry kid finds an outlet for his emotions thanks to Trebol, finds an environment that treats him like a god, it’s no wonder he grows up to be who he is
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which brings us to Law and his backstory. Incredibly terrifying and tragic, gruesome in a way that the anime censored it, he lived through a massacre witnessing the death of not only his family but his entire nation. Law takes a similar outlook on the world as Doffy when he was a child: people are vicious, the world is cruel, and I want to hurt as many as possible. The difference here is that Law has Cora. The younger of the brothers, who was much more shy and kind as a child as opposed to Doflamingo, pretty much abandons his government assigned duty to try and help this child. In just a few months Law is shown unconditional love, even if he doesn’t quite know that yet, and shown that there are kind people, even those who don’t know you that well, which completely disregards Doflamingo’s outlook on everyone being vicious. That’s why it makes sense when Cora doesn’t shoot the gun, but Doflamingo does. The Donquixote brothers (and Law by extension) are incredibly tragic to me and deserving of their own post, but oh god does this entire situation make me cry everytime
Tumblr media
This post has already been going on for long enough so let’s skip through most of the fight, as a lot of it has been talked about, and get to one of my favorite moments in it: when Law’s plan fails and he lays on the floor accepting his fate, Luffy steps in, stops Doflamingo and has one of the coolest stare offs with him. This moment right here is the absolute culmination of all the excitement I have leading up to my favorite fight in all of One Piece, because good god is Luffy vs Doflamingo is going to be phenomenonal

My only real criticism of Dressrosa is the questionable decision to take half of the Straw Hats out of the arc and replace them with a bunch of one-off warrior characters that we don't really know and don't really care about. Bartolomeo, Cavendish, Rebecca, and Kyros are interesting enough in their own right to deserve the screentime they get, but the rest of them are basically interchangeable and not particularly memorable.

Romantic rivalry between Doflamingo and Law for a pirate darling? (a strawhat darling if possible)
Oof... If we're talking Dressrosa Law... that poor man is getting beat.... Story events will be tweaked to focus on dynamics between Law, Doffy, and you. Sorry if things aren't entirely accurate. Warning, Doffy's ending is DARK.
Yandere! Doflamingo vs Law with Straw Hat! Darling
(Ft. Platonic! Luffy)
Pairing: Romantic - Rivalry
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Manipulation, Violence, Overprotective/Possessive behavior, Kidnapping, Restraints, Blood, Attempted murder, Kissing, Biting/Marking, Mind break (Darling), Torture, Forced relationship (Doffy)/Dubious relationship (Law).
Tumblr media
This rivalry... at least, when it takes place... feels so one-sided?
The time I feel this rivalry would take place is the Dressrosa arc.
This arc has Law getting beat like... how many times? 3-4?
I have a feeling Law would try to fight Doflamingo in this rivalry...
Yet he isn't going to be able to get rid of him unless Luffy helps like in canon.
Doflamingo doesn't even really view this as a rivalry.
Doflamingo has always seen Law as a brat.
He's a brat his brother took in... and he can't even use his extremely strong Devil Fruit right at this time.
Doflamingo doesn't care that Law is an adult now.
He's still a weak brat who thinks he has the right to oppose Doflamingo....
You came to Dressrosa with Luffy and Law to help defeat Doflamingo.
Unfortunately... You get more involved in the animosity between Law and Doflamingo than you thought....
Law originally wasn't entirely fond of you.
The Straw Hats are a means to an end for him.
Although... When he sees Doflamingo take an interest in you, he grows concerned for your safety.
He knows with Luffy you're... probably in capable hands...
Yet he can't figure out why he's so... anxious about you?
Do you really remind him of Corazon that much?
Doflamingo's motivation can vary.
He might just see you as an attractive face he can manipulate and break into being his toy.
That or maybe he realizes Law is defensive about you... and just wants to hurt Law at first.
Aw, look, the kid made friends...
Wouldn't it be a shame if he held you hostage just to mess with him?
Either way, Doflamingo still sees you as he sees many...
A toy he can use and break as he pleases.
There isn't much genuine love with Doflamingo.
He's arrogant and hard to read.
Most of the time he just likes to play with people.
Law, on the other hand, I can see him forming a genuine relationship with his obsession.
He just hopes Luffy doesn't make a big deal about it later.
Law is going to try and fight Doflamingo if the man thinks of trying to approach you.
But I will not say he's winning.
He'll make a good attempt, but Law's going to tire himself.
Which will only result in you both being captured, for very different reasons.
Based on what I've seen with Doflamingo vs Law during Dressrosa, it's unfair.
Even Law had to learn to trust people in order to take down Doflamingo.
With your captain's help, he's able to get rid of him.
Until then, well...
You get to be a little doll for Doffy.
I have a feeling this rivalry starts with Law attempting to watch you.
He's mostly doing it for Luffy at first...
Yet then Doflamingo makes a comment on you being closer than you are.
Law pauses, knowing it's just to taunt him...
Yet why does the thought fluster him more than intended?
He messed with you in Punk Hazard... just like the rest of your crew...
Yet even after that, you treated him like a comrade due to your alliance....
He fights Doflamingo originally for his own plans and Luffy.
But eventually he'll be beat... a few times... and you're both captives.
Law gets tied to that damn throne, but you're dragged off to 'get acquainted' with Doflamingo.
He acts charming, calling you sweet nicknames as he asks about your status with Law.
You call him a friend, which Doffy finds really amusing.
Really? You'd call that brat a friend?
Unsurprising to hear from a Straw Hat....
It's then Doflamingo decides to toy with you.
He's done it a million times already.
He asks why you bother to stay with the Straw Hats?
Let alone Law?
He tries to convince you to stay with him.
He has a palace, after all.
Don't you want luxury?
He can spoil you if you just ditch those other pirates.
Spoil really just means being a pet.
Even if you refuse to accept his offer, he doesn't care.
He was hoping you'd fall for his charm....
How upsetting... but...
You don't have much time to protest before he's using string to tie your wrists, grinning devilishly at you.
You're still going to be his pet... and hopefully you're entertaining.
You only go along with it to try and help Law.
You want to help him escape, whenever you can scamper off to where he's being kept... you tell him that.
He's... shocked and confused.
Why are you trying to help him so much? You don't have to?
Yet... You want to...
You're putting up with Doffy for him...
...
His heart needs to stop fluttering, damn it....
Law doesn't see you often as the rest of the Straw Hats plan ways to rescue you both
The only times he does is usually when Doflamingo wants to show off that he has you or you manage to sneak to him.
You're always struggling in your binds when Doffy wants to show you off, all while Doffy tugs you along like a loyal hound.
Law hates this.
If he didn't like you before, now he starts to due to Law realizing he put you through this.
You don't deserve this.
Yet you're doing it for Law....
Law grimaces at the way Doffy nibbles your shoulder or neck, making a show of the fact he's taken you as his own.
If anything, this makes Law want to kill Doffy faster.
Most of the rivalry is you and Law being held hostage until Luffy comes to bust his friends out of the palace.
Law unfortunately can't check on your condition until the final battle due to his cuffs...
Yet he often asks about you.
You think it's pity or a minor concern...
It definitely isn't because Law is falling in love with how far you're willing to go to help him like your captain.
Definitely not.
Honestly, for fun I'll make this multiple endings as some people enjoy that in rivalries.
Ending A - Trafalgar D. Law Route
This is the ending closest to canon.
Law tries to fight Doflamingo again, this time for a couple of reasons.
He wants to avenge Corazon... and show you that he's thankful for your efforts.
Both reasons are out of love.
That's something Law happens to cherish.
He knows Doflamingo is just using you for entertainment...
He's always hated the man for what he's done.
Law really does try to take down Doflamingo.
Luffy can probably sense why Law's doing this and helps, especially when things don't go in Law's favor due to the power difference.
In this ending, through much bloodshed, Doflamingo is defeated
Law, despite being quite literally disarmed, practically screams that he wants to kill Doffy.
Unfortunately, before he can swing his sword down on the beaten man, Doflamingo is arrested.
It's somewhat easy for Law to fix his wounds due to his Devil Fruit.
He's supposed to recover... but even then he's by your side to check you over.
You're confused, saying he's in worse connection...
But you shut up when he immediately tenses, glaring at the marks on your neck.
You're practically bombarded with questions from Law, asking what Doffy did to you.
You try to answer but Law's already assuming the worst.
It takes the rest of the Straw Hats to help calm him down enough to rest.
Law then sticks with the Dressrosa Straw Hats to Zou, needing to join back with his crew.
The doctor rarely leaves your side after recovery, staying close while never quite explaining why.
He appreciates all you've done for him... He just wishes he could've gotten rid of Doffy sooner.
Even better, kill him.
He would've painted the town red with Doffy....
It becomes progressively harder for Law to depart from the Straw Hats because you're there.
He excuses it as 'needing their help' to take down the Emperors like Kaido once he's part of his crew again.
Yet while that's half true... He's also doing it because he finds himself unable to leave you.
He often makes excuses to be close to you, leaning on your shoulder during chats or keeping an arm around you.
Some members who were at Dressrosa are going to suspect these changes in behavior...
Luffy doesn't.
In fact, Luffy probably doesn't fully understand Law's fixation on you, but still encourages it because you're all friends.
Luffy doesn't think Law's going to harm you or do anything wrong.
You two just seem very close.
Meanwhile, Law's planning on ways to convince you to join his own crew...
You've charmed him with your loyalty... maybe if he tries hard enough he can have you be that way with him and him alone... He just needs to be patient....
Ending B - Donquixote Doflamingo Route
This is the ending that differs more from canon.
It's a much more bloody end, one where Doflamingo manages to drive off the Straw Hats and Law...
If not outright kill them or make them toys.
You're left to watch as Luffy, your captain, actually loses to Doffy.
Doflamingo is left bordering on unhinged at the insolence your friends have.
I have a feeling he'd keep both you and Law around.
Law just to torture... and you to continue being a pet.
Doflamingo, covered in blood, would continue the Birdcage plan.
A massacre is made from Dressrosa and Doflamingo flees with his two captives.
Law's practically on the verge of death... Doflamingo won't let him die.
Law's still managing to yell at Doflamingo, but is silenced by string.
You can try to plead, but Doflamingo shushes you.
You're part of his crew now... an entertaining doll he can hold and use....
All while Law watches most likely.
Doflamingo does plan to break you both, Law probably literally.
While Law's kept in Isolation, Doffy keeps you with himself.
He breaks you into the mold he wants you to fit.
His 'affection' is rough, filled with biting and harsh words.
He tells you that he's the only one who can have you.
He tells you he can kill Law at any time.
He highly doubts those Straw Hats survived, anyways.
You just have him... and maybe Law if he lets you visit him.
Eventually, it wouldn't be surprising if you broke under these conditions.
Soon, Doffy plans to recondition you... to break you and build you up...
Then he can make you his perfect toy... his perfect doll...
All while Law watches, barely kept alive for Doffy's amusement.

The One Piece World Timezones [Fixed]
Okay, so I did a big WHOOPS. I thought the Grand Line is the equator. Someone in the notes pointed out that no, the Grand Line is not the equator and honestly, yeah, my fault for not going a bit deeper into my research.
Here is how the globe is and how the Grand Line goes. The blue thingy is I suspect the actual equator.
Tumblr media
The reasons I thought the Grand Line is on the equator is:
1) weather
2) natural occurences
3) map on the One Piece Wiki
Crazy shit happens in the equator in our world.
Here is how the Grand Line is positioned as told by Law.
Tumblr media
(source)
Now, let's fix the mistake. (Sighs)
And... ROTATE THE MAP.
Tumblr media
Here it is. I sighed many sighs while rotating this and maybe I cried a bit at getting everything 3 hours wrong and then cried some more that Dressrosa & Hawaii aren't in the same timezone bcs goddamn it, that fit, as did Mariejois.
But FINE. I'm doing this for all the Doffy x Reader writers, all the One Piece x Reader writers, all the One Piece fanfic writers, full stop. I REFUSE TO ALLOW MY MISTAKE TO BE A CURSE. I'll also edit the OG post and put this pic there so both posts have the correct one.
Okay, one more time, 100% correct this time:
Paradise:
Reverse Mountain [UTC -1]
Cape Valley [UTC 0]
Cactus Island [UTC 0]
Little Garden [UTC +1]
Drum Island [UTC +2]
Alabasta [UTC +3]
Island where Luffy Kicked Bellamy's Ass Vol 1 Jaya [UTC+4]
Skypiea [UTC +4]
The Arc I Skipped After Seeing It Became Filler Ring Long Island [UTC +5]
Water 7 [UTC +5]
I'm so sorry, Snail 😭
Ennies Lobby [UTC +6]
Florian Triangle [UTC +6]
Sabaody Archipelago [UTC +7]
Amazon Lily [UTC +7]
Impel Down [UTC +8]
Marineford [UTC +8]
Holy Land of Mariejois [UTC+8]
All the thematic representation of it being UTC +12, splash into the water 😭😭😭
Fishman Island [UTC +9]
New World:
New Marineford [UTC -8]
Punk Hazard [UTC -8]
Dressrosa [UTC -7]
Totto Land [UTC -5]
Wano [UTC -4]
Law vs Blackbeard Island [UTC -3]
Elbaf [UTC -3]
Weird that it's Elbaf that's Northeast, since shouldn't Law have gone there as his route? Maybe Kid lied and went there still after Law said Northeast is the quickest path, while Law took a detour onto Winner Island to fight Blackbeard.
Hachinosu (Pirate Island, Blackbeard's HQ) [UTC -3]
Egghead [UTC -3]
Even though Egghead's not shown on the map, Luffy went directly south from Wano, and by the line, the Sunny would have entered the UTC -3 zone.
Lodestar Island [UTC -2]
Calculating Guide:
From East to West
- if it's 17:00 (5 pm) in Marineford (UTC +8) and you want to know what time it is in Dressrosa, this is what you do:
1) (Current time in Marineford) - (UTC time number of Marineford) which is
17 (5pm) - 8 = 9 am (UTC 0)
2) now that you have UTC 0, you put another minus, this one from Dressrosa's UTC, which is UTC -7, so it goes
9 am - 7 = 2 am
So it's 2 am in Dressrosa, while it's 5 pm in Marineford!
From West to East
Say it's 22:00 (10 pm) on Saturday in Dressrosa, what time is it in Holy Land? Here are the steps.
1) (Dressrosa current time) + (Dressrosa's Timezone Number) = time at UTC 0
So that's:
10 pm + 7 = 5 am Sunday (UTC 0)
2) UTC 0 time + Holy Land Time Number
So: 5 am + 8 = 13:00 (1 pm) Sunday
So while it's 10 pm Saturday in Dressrosa and Doflamingo is conducting business with the Paradise part of the Grand Line, in the Holy Land, the ugly Celestials are eating lunch on Sunday or napping bcs they are freeloading cu- (censored) unlike Doflamingo who's actually working!
(looks at the maps of my previous timezone post) Okay. It's fine. I only missed Dressrosa by 3 hours. IT'S FINE.
(it's not fine, I'm crying, it's not FINE, my favourite island and I couldn't even get it right the first time, if Doffy turns me into a toy I deserve it)
I'll go climb the Red Line and jump off it. This is the greatest shame as a scientist. Wrong numbers.
A/N: Of course, if what the pic above said is true, it might as well could be that the original tinezone map I made is semi- correct and the entire territory up until Wano has a timezone from UTC -12 to UTC -9 if it's only the first third of the New World, as those are the "thirds" of the west timezones. I don't read the manga, but I'm caught up with the anime and if the manga does reveal a map, actual map like that curved one in the picture with Law or Oda finally makes one, I give the manga readers full permission to send it to me in an ask and I will update the posts again. For now, this is the most "official" map we have, and the most recent one. Also, the Grand Line being in the shape of a rollercoaster is fitting, haha.

Would Crocodile ever take Law in after Cora dies? Because just imagine Feral Law vs. Feral Ace on their first meeting. Luffy and Sabo just there taking bets or something in the background.
If he knew about Law then I can imagine he would grab him, yes. Whether Law wanted him to or not.
I don't think he does in the Mini-Mingo and Grumpy Verse because that follows canon pretty closely and Law and Cora should technically already have disappeared when Crocodile starts his fling with Doflamingo. (Though Crocodile can always save the day and get Cora out, though both Doffy and Law would most likely assume him to be dead.)
It's possible he got Law off the island and has been sort of taking care of him/ "sponsoring" him in secret just to make sure the kid would be fine? Because feral, stinky children count among Crocodile's weaknesses. But I don't think Law would know about ASL or ASL about Law. (Though Dragon would most likely know?)
In an AU where Croc had something with Cora, then I feel Cora would trust Crocodile enough - who does work for Sengoku too after all and who Sengoku at least somewhat trusts - to tell him what is happening? Maybe?

I love to think that Sanji is a character who probably thinks he is in the romantic genre and not in a shonen manga. He wants to be a knight but is instead the princess.
He has this whole being in love with love thing, ideas and ideals that seem straight out of fairy tales. Him and the people around him are, like, all those phrases and metaphors personified. He's this romantic at heart who loves the idea of love too much. But honestly, can you really blame him?
Funny thing is as much as he has this love to feel, he remains quite oblivious to how much he, intentionally or not, is soaking it all up too.
He was caged, thrown in a dungeon, and hidden for who or well, what he was. Classic fairytale stuff. And then his knight in shining pink armor is his own sister. The one who pushes him out of the cage and doesn't fly away with him. Emotions with agency and emotions without agency and all that.
Zeff, for him, is the literal embodiment of clawing a part of yourself out. Ripping himself out so Sanji could be full. Consuming himself to not let either of them be consumed. Like, just the extremes? The limits someone would go for him? Because they share the same dream?
His captain climbs the mountain with his bare hands. Luffy claws his way up with Nami on his back while he holds on to Sanji with his teeth. Neither of his crewmates are dying on his watch and Luffy makes sure of that, paving his way with his literal tooth and nails.
He follows Robin because he knows she has her reasons. Even if he doesn't know her reasons. It's the ‘will follow you to the end of the world, no questions asked’ of it all.
When he does get hurt after his refusal of attacking back against Kalifa, Nami goes on to fight that battle for him after telling him to call for help next time. It's one of the coward trio fighting a battle for one of the monster trio.
He usually wants to be a knight. But he gets his own knights time and again. This princess in a tower…
Sanji tells Zoro when they first meet that he's stupid if he is planning to die for his dream. When Zoro stands before Kuma, Sanji rushes in because he thinks Zoro is still stupid but for planning to die before fulfilling his dream.
Zoro puts Luffy’s dream above his. Sanji puts both Luffy and Zoro's dreams above his.
It's Sanji's belief of being worthless against Zoro's belief that Luffy is priceless.
And then Zoro knocks him out. A wound that's there constantly between his ribcage? A throbbing bruise at his side that makes sure his heart still beats.
He is so ready to have Doflamingo’s attention on himself so that Nami, Chopper, and Brook can make it out of there along with the Sunny. Only for them to go they are not leaving without him. And then it's not even a one time thing with those three.
So, Zoro puts Luffy’s dream above his. Sanji puts both Luffy and Zoro's dreams above his. And then you have Luffy putting Sanji's dream above his.
We have both father vs father figure and authority figure vs authority figure going on in WCI. And only the parties in the latter category are present.
Sanji goes back and gets hurt and beaten. He goes toe to rubber against Luffy who refuses to beat him. Sanji gets no choice in being given away as a pawn. But Luffy asks him what he wants. Judge goes back against his own word that he bound Sanji to. Luffy makes a promise of staying there come whatever. Luffy binds himself to his promise. Judge is ready to blow up Sanji's hand. Luffy was ready to give up his own.
He had Judge who covered his face because he didn't want anyone to see him, to know who he was. And there's Luffy’s acceptance of Sanji's request. Simply saying that's just who Sanji is. The refusal for him to be seen for what he isn't vs being perceived for who he is.
Judge lists all the things that are supposedly wrong with Sanji. All Luffy hears are praises of his cook.
The ‘there's someone who loves you for something someone else hates’ and trash being treasure for the others.
Then there he goes baking a cake. And it is shown as his strength. Not because he can fight. Not because he is strong. He is just who he is. Something something about love and food winning people over.
When he fears he is going to lose his emotion (and by extension his agency), his solution is deciding how he dies. Choosing the one thing that he can't really choose if he isn't there any longer. And the line goes, don't die until then. If you aren't losing your head, don't die, like, ever, or as long as it's possible. The journey from "I don't want to see you die" to "I entrust you with my life".
Then there's Robin who seems so happy and proud that he called for help. This self sacrificing, half the time suicidal crewmate actually reaches out for help for the first time. And he chooses her. He calls for her. This time his knight(s) come in an armor of cherry blossoms with a chill of death.
He gets Robin throwing hands for him. (And she's got many, many hands.) Oh, to be a protector of one of your crew’s main protectors.
Just the sheer romanticism of it all… No wonder this boy is so much in love with love.

So I rewatched the entirety of the Baroque Works saga for the first time in quite a few years, and before that I did also finaly watch MelonTeee's video essay about the East Blue Saga. And naturally I am now plagued with some Thoughts™
So in her essay (which you should go and watch if you haven't already, let's be real) MelonTeee discussed how one of East Blue's key themes was people's treasures, be it items, dreams and most importantly other people, and the way people are willing to sacrifice their lives or their own dreams to protect those who are dear to them. Rewatching Baroque Works Saga, the key, long running themes I picked up on were that of
Trust and betrayal (Laboon at the time being under the impression that his friends had betrayed him and left him to rot at Reverse Mountain; Whiskey Peak is all about backstabbing people; Little Garden was about Dorry and Broggy's friendship being too strong for either party to believe the other had betrayed them; Croc's trust issues in Alabasta being his ultimate downfall)
Friendship and unbreakable bonds (Laboon's new bonds with Luffy and co; Dorry and Broggy again; the comparison between Chopper trying to say goodbye to Luffy and co only to be denied vs Vivi's farewell)
What makes a country, a good ruler and if/when is overthrowing a ruler justified (Drum and Alabasta explore these together)
And perhaps most importantly, protecting that what is important to you. And that one in particular I feel like is the Alabasta arc's main theme on its own, as it comes up over and over again.
The Rebel Army wants to protect their country from their "corrupt king" by overthrowing him; the King wants to protect his people from needless bloodshed and tries to avoid combat; Vivi wants to protect her people but also her friends and can't find the strenght to beg them for help lest they get hurt on her behalf; Luffy wants to protect his friends and Vivi so they don't get killed by the likes of Crocodile. Protecting those you love is an important theme in this arc, it is the arc's very heart as the conflict is was born out of that love. And that's why it's so interesting to me how Crocodile's motif seems to be being a protector, a guardian. And I'm not just talking about the "Croc is based on Sobek the Egyptian crocodile headed protector god" and "Guardian of Alabasta"- if that was all then I'm not sure I'd even go as far as to call it a "motif" for him, but it comes back to haunt us again in Marineford with the ever legendary
Tumblr media
And that is just... curious. Because Crocodile as we know him is just Some Asshole with no weaknesses and nothing he cares about except for his own ambition. So being a protector being his motif, of all fucking people, is really interesting. Like, One Piece doesn't really do shallow villians, there's always a reason to why a character has become the way they have and why they're doing what they're doing.
Kaidou was raised in an environment where one justified the reason for their existence through strenght and combat alone.
Doflamingo hates the world and wants it to just fucking burn because he never let go of the entitlement of being a World Noble.
Lucci was brainwashed into becoming a warrior for absolute justice since he was a small child.
Arlong watched his people suffer from the oppression of humans first hand and that hatred consumed his heart.
Wapol was a spoiled nepobaby manchild who thought he should be allowed to do whatever the fuck he wanted because he's King.
Why the fuck is Crocodile the way he is. Why does he want to create a utopia, a military nation powerful enough to rival the WG itself. What has driven him to to strive for that goal. Why is being a protector his motif.
Tumblr media
East Blue explored the things you are willing to do and the lenghts you're willing to go for your "treasure", the ones you love and care about. And Alabasta is about protecting them; even if not called that explicitly, Alabasta is about protecting your treasure. On one hand, having the man with no treasure, nothing and no one he wants to protect, as the primary antagonist of the arc that about protecting your loved ones is a great juxtaposition. Like there is an argument to be made that the reason Crocodile lost is because he had nothing to lose, while everyone else in the arc had everything to lose in this conflict and thus couldn't afford it, as they'd be left with nothing. And, looking at Alabasta on its own, as a standalone arc, that does work. But when you look at One Piece as a whole, when you look at everything that came before and after, I can't help but to feel that can't be the case, can it? Surely Crocodile has something he did want to protect after all?

i'm caught up with end of wano, so here's some parallels from one piece that could be or don't have to be connected, but are still pretty cool.
long post ahead & wano spoilers
protecting new era:
rayleigh protecting zoro at sabaody from an attack by kizaru, ch 511
Tumblr media Tumblr media
luffy protecting law from an attack by doflamingo, with same move as rayleigh above, dressrosa ch 782
Tumblr media
at the end of wano, ch 1055, shanks telling ryokugyu a similar thing as rayleigh above ("don't pick the buds before they sprout. their era is only just the beginning"),
shanks "when the new shoots that just changed pirating history are exhausted, (..) are you that afraid of the new era?!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
zoro king of hell
same page as luffy protecting law - with haki clashing against doflamingo, the panels after that talking about supreme king haki - qualities of a king,. in this context for doflamingo, ch 782
Tumblr media
at amazon lily ppl reacting to luffy using supreme king haki, while he doesn't know he just did, ch. 519. "that's the haki of the chosen ones' only one in millions has that spirit!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
vs, zoro unknowingly unleashing haki of supreme king for (possibly) the first time, ch 997
Tumblr media
and later during his rooftop fight against kaido, (and still denies/ doesn't know what they're talking about, which is very interesting). ch 1010
Tumblr media
then during his fight with King, unleashing haki, which makes others around fall unconscious (as mentioned above to doflamingo is a sign of supreme king haki), ch 1033
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and some more chapters later, claiming the title of King of Hell (funny in this context it was told to doflamingo he was chosen by the heavens, and for zoro he became the king of hell. smth smth about the character work there).,
and as always - connected to luffy and his dreams!. ch 1036
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then there's the asura figure surrounding zoro's powers,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and i find it so interesting that on wikipedia about asura (which zoro's sword and fighting styles are also based on with hindu and buddhist religions) is mentioned they're "considered enemy of the gods"
Tumblr media
i like how it's the same phrase as we also heard in the manga before form law's flashbacks about corazon, ch 764
Tumblr media
this is in the context of the people with the D. name, and then mostly used for law himself, and luffy and how far he's come to truly wreck the world government, as well as them being a threat to the celestial dragons.
luffy and nika:
from point above, i like how the "enemy of gods" being applied to people with the name D. is also interesting in the context of luffy awakening his devil fruit powers, which are named sun god nika. (i know that in the phrase "enemy of gods" mean gods as the celestial dragons, but it's still interesting)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which doesn't take away from luffy's character as i was a bit worried at first.
he's testing the new skills and powers, and he sees how he can reach the new limits he couldn't before. it might have been the devil fruit that chose who would eat it, but it's luffy and his dream that make the decisons., ch 1045
Tumblr media
and ch 1049
Tumblr media
luffy in ch 507 & 1053, his core ideals are still the same
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
not fighting someone
shanks not fighting the mountain bandits, and luffy not understanding it, ch 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jaya arc, luffy and zoro not fighting against bellamy, and nami not understanding at first, ch 225
Tumblr media
and ch 1054, momonosuke telling yamato not to fight the navy guy because he wants to be able to protect wano, and let yamato go to the seas as he wants to - it's just that similar energy that luffy has when he tells someone not to fight (or when to fight), without almost any explanations.
Tumblr media
also loved this usopp moment!, - could be paralelled to his whole character arc. ch 1036.
he's so real for saying this to kin and kiku (and samurai in general). he's always scared and sometimes can be acting like a coward, but he always, always, stands up for his crew and fights to live through whatever hell luffy puts in front of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-- wano was so good and there are so many thoughts about one piece in my head now, about each of the characters and their development/meanings/themes! OTL

I REFUSE to believe Shanks is in any way shape or form evil or will be in any way a villain, like sure Luffy has to defeat him but it’s the same way Zoro has to defeat Mihawk yk, they ain't Doflamingo and while this is 90% an emotional thing I think I've managed to create a somewhat reasonable line of reasoning (haha) about my beliefs so follow me here
Fact One: Shanks and his Secret Evil Twin were born Celestial Dragons
Fact Two: Gol D Roger and Rayleigh raised Shanks
Fact Three: Gol D Roger and Rayleigh aren't Evil
Everyone agrees with these? Great, now
Premise One: One Piece is a story about Freedom, Liberation, and Hope, about both fulfilling and choosing ones destiny, though it obviously has deep themes of Inherited Will, it also constantly reinforces that ones will and actions are their own, we have the freedom to choose who we want to be
Premise Two: one of the other themes (or really a continuation of the first one) in One Piece is of Nature vs Nurture. We already saw this with Doflamingo and Rosinante, who, obviously, were also born as Celestial Dragons, and I seriously doubt Oda's final message (or one of) is going to be "some people are just born evil i guess" when even the Vinsmoke Brothers, who were basically genetically engineered to be born evil, still have a tiny bit of love in them
Premise Three: Luffy has been shown time and time again to be an excellent judge of character, like when he welcome Robin to the crew or when he was immediately creeped out by Blackbeard, so I don't think he would be this wrong about his mentor, someone whom he holds so dear to his heart and has such a positive view of
You could argue these I guess but I stand by them and think they are pretty solid based on the text and canon that we have. So, with this understanding,
Claim One: having a twist like "aha! The Twin we thought was Evil was Secretly Good and the Twin we thought was Good was Secretly Evil ALL ALONG!!!" would be stupid and would make me lose respect in Oda as a writer. Especially when we were just introduced to said Evil But Secretly Good twin
Claim Two: and if the twist is as simple as "they're both evil"... then why introduce the Secret Evil Twin in the first place? No, I firmly believe that Secret Evil Twin (sorry to keep calling him that, i forgot his name and I'm too lazy to search it so it's "Secret Evil Twin" or "Stabs") is there to show us what an Evil Shanks could be. What Shanks could have been without Roger's and Rayleigh's influence. Nature vs Nurture.
See? Perfectly reasonable. And therefore we can conclude that Shanks is not Evil. Hurray!
Addendum: Shanks being Evil would break Luffy's heart and he cannot go through that again, if Shanks and Luffy's reunion is anything except Cathartic and Emotional I'll kms. Also Usopp would be pretty bummed that his dad is following an evil guy

Note
OP men vs Reader who is like "No stop you're embarrassing me! 😳😤" at the faintest hint of PDA.
Sooo many OP men would just be shameless about continuing right on nuzzling your neck for all to see, some because they like to make you uncomfortable (Doflamingo, I'm looking at you), others because they just can't help themselves with how sweet you are and want to show you off as theirs (I'm thinking Franky, maybe Kid?).
Some (like Luffy), wouldn't understand why you wouldn't want their arms around you?? Like, hello, hugs and kisses are awesome?
Sanji would probably fall all over himself backtracking and apologizing for making you even the slightest bit uncomfortable, his poor sweet angel!
And of course, I think you have Zoro, who would be equally as squirrelly about PDA (at least at first), but I also think he'd get a little thrill out of pushing your boundaries, if only for a moment, before letting you be.
Also, I know you said OP men but...Robin is a chronic flusterer because she thinks you're sooo cute when you get all squirmy and huffy about it. And Nami can't help but tease you, but I do think she'd be the first to back off if you seemed uncomfortable with PDA, and maybe save the snuggles for more private moments.
